When you live in Colorado and you are somehow connected to the spiritual and/or yoga world, you will hear of Crestone, this old hippy town in the San Luis Valley, somewhere south of Salida.
An Ashtanga Yoga retreat with Annie Pace, one of the most accomplished teachers in the West (or maybe even worldwide), is the purpose of my visit. And before I dive into the Ashtanga practice, I had a few days to settle in, rest and explore the area with my husband and Annie.
Hippie Dippeee Dooooo
Coming from Austria, where everything is very developed and very accessible, I thought Telluride was pretty “off the grid”. Arriving in Crestone definitely put that impression into perspective: 1 store, 1 gas pump, 1 post office, some scattered buildings, many yurts, and of course temples and spiritual centers located in town’s vicinity. For miles, there is nothing else. Just views of a beautiful, open valley, which reminds me a lot of the Indus Valley in Northern India.
Wherever you go, deer graze and stare at you, you will come across herds of yaks & alpacas and everyone waves to you with a big smile and says hello.
Great Sand Dunes National Park
Located approx. 1,5h from Crestone is the Great Sand Dunes National Park. When driving towards Crestone, you can kind of see the sand dunes in the distance but I had no idea of their grandeur until Stash and I started hiking up the dunes.
Once we crossed the little creek to make our way towards the dunes, my shoes flew off immediately and the sand felt great and warm on my feet. My husband and I hiked for quite some time, up one dune after the other. We both had the impression we were lost in Oman or the Sahara Desert. Sand, as far as your eyes can see, with snowy peaks on the horizon.
On our way back to my home for the next month, we passed a UFO landing station before ending our day soaking in one of the valley’s hot springs.
Again, breathtaking views of the valley and a stunning sunset made my first few days in Crestone a truly wonderful & serene experience.
More to come soon from my experience with Annie Pace at Shakti Sharanam and ceremonies at the Ashram here in Crestone.
