Nothing screams love like running a 20 mile race through the wild desert of Moab, but I have to say it was the sweetest and most memorable Valentine's Day I can remember.
After pacing my dear friend, Amy, for the North Face Endurance Challenge back in December, I was craving something adventurous of my very own. The opportunity to train for the Red Hot 33k came up five weeks ago thanks to Casey, an awe-inspiring entrepreneur and mother of two.
Five weeks is not a lot of time to train for a 33k, which by the way, I believed to be 18 miles until the day before the race I was informed it was actually 20. Thanks Emily. Sometimes I do my best work with little time to overthink my training.
One week before the race, a major life event rocked my world. My wonderful Grandmother passed away at the age of 91. 91!! What an incredible woman Wilma was and will always be in my memories. Devastated by the news, I was not sure I wanted to race.
My family celebrated her life the day before the race and I was surprised how it gave me some closure and inspiration to run for her. I ran for her tireless energy to raise five kids, for her southern hospitality, for taking mother from grand to great, for her pickles, (yes pickles), for being the one to gather our big family around the dinner table. I ran for Wilma.
And for that, I ran my best race yet.
The desert is a powerful place. It's vastness is transformative.
If you have ever had the chance to explore the Utah desert, your memory will take you back to the hot sun beating down on your skin, the sand in your shoes and the lack of places to hide that in some strange way opens the soul to heal. If you haven't explored the desert, stop what you are doing and go.
As for the race finish, the love continued with champagne, strawberries, flowers, good friends and dogs all splashing around in the Colorado River. It was a true celebration of love.
